LiDAR Surveys

W.I.R.E. Services’ exclusive LiDAR provider, LiDAR Services International (LSI), operates LIDAR systems worldwide and has completed projects in Africa, South America, Asia, and North America.

LSI owns and operates three LiDAR systems which have been designed and manufactured by LSI engineers.  The HELIX System supports several complementary components including:

  • A Riegl LMS-Q560 laser operating at 240kHz (240,000 pulses per second)
  • A GPS receiver and antenna
  • An Inertial Measurement Unit
  • A computer system for sensor control timing and data logging
  • A downward looking digital camera
  • A forward looking digital camera
  • A forward looking digital video camera

A unique, and import characteristic of the Q560 laser is its ability to digitize or quantize the echo signal of each laser pulse.  This time sampled digitization allows for post mission review and sampling of the entire returning energy waveform.  This results in an essentially unlimited number of echo returns as compared with the more common Constant Fraction Discriminator (CFD) scanning systems.  CFD scanners return single value ranges for a system defined maximum number of returns and have "dead time" periods after each return which can not capture further information echoes until this period has past.  The "dead time" can sometimes miss close proximity features.
